    Irish companies urged to continue drive to reduce energy costs and emissions
    Despite difficult global trading conditions, Irish companies must continue to strive to reduce their energy consumption levels. Industrial sector involvement is vital in securing a sustainable future for Ireland. That is according to Dermot Ahern T.D., Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, speaking in Dublin at the launch of the Annual Report of the Large Industry Energy Network (LIEN) for 2001–2002.

    90% of residents in major Irish cities and towns view current patterns of car use as a problem — research
    90% of residents in 10 major Irish cities and towns, including Dublin, Cork and Galway, have said they think the current patterns of car use in towns are a problem. That is according to independent research on attitudes towards Car Free Day 2002, commissioned by Sustainable Energy Ireland and published today. The research, based on 1,007 telephone interviews, was carried out by Lansdowne Market Research. 83% of residents surveyed said that car use must be limited to improve the freedom of movement in cities and towns.

    Thermo King in Galway has played host to a major national energy efficiency workshop for large industry. Entitled “Energy Efficient Lighting in Large Industry”, the workshop — facilitated by Sustainable Energy Ireland — was attended by some of the largest industrial users of energy in Ireland.

    Energy efficient driving could help motorists slash annual fuel bill by 13%
    Irish motorists could slash their fuel bills by over 13% by adopting a more energy efficient style of driving. That is according to Tom Halpin, Head of Consumer Awareness in Sustainable Energy Ireland, speaking during Energy Awareness Week, which ran from 22–28 September 2002.
